The end of our record-resetting heat wave is almost at hand.
High temperatures will go back above 100 degrees Friday, topping out at 104 — which would come close to our current daily record of 107 set in 2000. Heat index levels could approach 110 areawide.
Thursday’s high was warmer than expected, setting a daily record in the process. Thursday topped out at 108 at the Emporia Municipal Airport, beating the prior high of 104 set in 2000. Eureka’s high Thursday was 104, below its daily record of 110 set in 1936.
The heat will break overnight as a frontal boundary brings us a slight chance of storms, including a marginal risk for wind along and north of the US Highway 56 corridor. Storms could continue into the early afternoon hours and resume overnight Saturday through Sunday morning.
Much more pleasant conditions are coming as well, with highs around 90 for the weekend. Highs will be in the mid-80s to around 90 for much of the upcoming work week.
With the overnight risk of severe weather, albeit low-end, stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for updates.
