Plans are in the works to redevelop and repurpose the former home of the Emporia Gazette, and residents can learn more about the grand plan Sunday.
Building owners Rick and Colleen Mitchell are the featured presenters as part of a program at the Red Rocks State Historic Site, 927 Exchange, at 2 pm. The Mitchells bought the building 20 months ago with an eye towards developing the Gazette Collective, including a restaurant, office space for Mitchell-Markowitz Construction, five “luxury residential units,” two short-term visitor rental units and an artist-in-residence studio.
The plan has secured a $250,000 federal grant for various renovations.
After noted publisher William Allen White purchased the Emporia Gazette in 1895, the building at 517 Merchant saw use as a newspaper for over 100 years until digital technology adjusted the need for space.
