Smoke from wildfires in Canada has caused issues for several states to our north for months, and — at least briefly — they will have an impact on our weather conditions.
And no, it’s not the smoke that causes Canadian bacon.
Smoke from those wildfires and fires also underway in the American Pacific Northwest will cause hazy sky conditions into the late morning hours. The haze could well redevelop by mid-afternoon and continue until close to midnight.
Nebraska had several air quality alerts due to the smoke Tuesday and has more coming Wednesday. Air quality is moderate statewide, according to airnow.gov.
Currently, there are hundreds of large out-of-control grass fires in Canada, mainly in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories but also scattered further east all the way to Quebec. Some of the fires have covered over 100,000 hectares, or close to 250,000 acres. As of Tuesday, over 38 million acres of grass has been burned this calendar year, with over 150,000 people evacuated and six people killed by the grass fire activity in Canada.
