Emporia’s water line network has been under stress in several locations since early Thursday.
Emporia Public Works went to the 300 block of South Pine for a water main break shortly before 10:30 am. This followed work on a separate break on Canterbury Road between 18th and Oxford before 6 am. It took about four hours to repair both failures.
The break on Canterbury follows three water main breaks Thursday — 23rd and Hillcrest, Ninth and Woodland and the 900 block of Sunnyslope.
City officials say there is more awareness of the waterline woes because the information is readily available through the online MyAlerts notification system, although there are not necessarily more water main breaks than in years past.
The city is also gearing up for a major waterline project going from 12th and Garfield south to Seventh before heading east to Neosho — and eventually connecting to all the city’s north-south waterlines while also moving under the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks before connecting to Carter Street near the Industrial Park 3 water tower.
Public Works Director Dean Grant will have an update on KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:20 am Wednesday.
6:45 am Friday: Water man break under investigation on Canterbury Road
Emporia’s Public Works Department hasn’t had much of a break dealing with water main breaks as the week has come to a close.
Just after 6 am, the city of Emporia announced a water main break on Canterbury Street. Canterbury is closed from 18th to Oxford Drive, and residents along that stretch of Canterbury may well have their water service affected.
Other details have not been announced.
