With flu shots becoming readily available areawide by mid-September, residents interested in getting vaccinated are encouraged to talk with their doctors and pharmacists to determine the best time for them.
Haag Pharmacy owner Amber Haag says her general recommendation is to get vaccinated over the next six weeks.
Meanwhile, veterans are encouraged to get their flu shots as soon as possible. Veterans Affairs nurse Jacque Mankin says the whole goal is to bring care to veterans across the VA’s Eastern Kansas coverage area, meaning options like a free flu shot clinic from 3-6 pm Oct. 18 at the Emporia American Legion Post 5 and drive-up flu shot clinics elsewhere.
The vaccinations are free for veterans already enrolled in VA health care, but Mankin encouraged non-enrolled veterans to get into the system so they can take advantage of these kinds of services.
Flu shots are coming available nationwide as three strains of COVID-19 are becoming more prevalent across the country, including Kansas. Fall is also the time for increased cases of RSV and strep throat.
