A nonprofit organization based in Emporia is receiving a sizable state grant to help fund drug abuse and addiction recovery services.
Empower House Ministries will receive $200,000 from the Kansas Fights Addiction Grant Review Board, according to Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach.
Funding comes as Empower House set an organization record of providing nearly 260 total nights of housing for 10 women in July, above the prior record of 245 nights. Empower House, which currently serves women only, is now looking for a home so it can offer a recovery residence for men.
The Empower House grant award is among more than $6 million distributed to over 30 similar organizations statewide. Grants are funded through opioid legal settlements as recovered by the Attorney General’s Office. Funding is specifically earmarked towards combating the state’s fentanyl epidemic. Assistant Attorney General Christopher Teters says the funding is designed to “help treat individuals with opioid and substance-use disorders, help develop communities of recovery, reduce the harm of the crisis, and ensure people seeking treatment are able to connect with providers offering care.”
