Emporia State Univeristy’s Special Collections and Archives will unveil its latest exhibit with a special reception Wednesday afternoon.
A Journey Toward Freedom: Black Americans and the Great Migration will open to the public at 2 pm in the exhibit hall of ESU’s William Allen White Library. Director of Special Collections and Archives Rebekah Curry, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, says the exhibit will detail the largest domestic movement in American history when over six million Black Americans left the South during the century after the Civil War.
Curry says the exhibit will do more than just explain the history of the migration, it will also explore many of the motivations that led to it.
Wednesday’s opening reception will run until 4 pm. The exhibit was made possible by gifts through the Carol Marshall estate to endow the Black Emporia Interpretations and Connections collection.
The exhibit will be open for the remainder of the fall semester. For more information visit Emporia.edu or call 620-341-6431.
