Three years of probation are ahead following sentencing for a man originally accused of attempted murder in Lyon County District Court.
During a sentencing hearing in Lyon County District Court Tuesday, Rafael Castaneda was sentenced to three years supervised probation with an underlying prison term of 64 months on charges of attempted voluntary manslaughter, aggravated burglary, criminal discharge of a weapon and criminal damage. According to Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman, the charges all carry the same sentence due to the double-double rule which limits a maximum sentence to twice the base sentence based on state statute.
The attempted manslaughter count was an alternate to an attempted murder charge, which was dropped as part of a plea agreement. Castaneda was arrested after trying to kill Orlando Cortez during a reported shots fired incident in the 10 block of Market in early February.
