A move towards a new public recreation facility could take a major step forward Monday.
Last month, the Emporia Recreation Commission approved the drafting of a recommendation for City Commission agreement after board discussion led to several policy proposals, including an additional sales tax amount as the main revenue stream for a new facility, preferably in central Emporia. Monday’s conversation could well led to the recommendation’s approval by the Rec Commission board.
Rec Commission staff and board members say the Lee Beran Recreation Center, in place for decades at 313 West Fourth, has less than half the space needed to meet the current and future demand for public recreation activities. Rec Commission board members and Future Funding Task Force members, who have been working this year on the recommendation up for a vote Monday, have expressed desires to see the current facility remain in operation to some degree.
Rec Commission board members have several other items to discuss Monday, including the possible formation of a Recreation Advisory Committee, an evaluation instrument for Director Tom McEvoy, the current state of the Rec Commission’s outdoor facilities agreements, investment of employee retention tax credit funds and a progress report on installation for the GolfZone simulator at the Rec Center.
The meeting is at 5:30 pm at the Rec Center.
