Mandatory water conservation methods are now in place following another water main break on Prairie Street.
The break was reported in the 2100 block of Prairie at 9:30 pm and follows a break in the 1600 block of Prairie Monday afternoon. A water warning means the city’s water supply is facing serious challenges according to City Communications Manager Christine Johnson.
As such, residents are now required to “eliminate non-essential water use,” conserve indoor use to 1,000 gallons per week and take emergency preparedness measures until the warning is lifted. This is the second water warning to be issued Monday after the city issued a warning related to the 1600 Prairie Break just before 5 pm.
The warning was later downgraded to a watch around 7 pm and then upgraded again to a warning just after 9:30 pm. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more updates as they become available.
7:21 pm Monday: EMPORIA WATER MAINS: Water watch, meaning voluntary conservation, now in effect for Emporia water customers
Voluntary water conservation measures are now in place after the city of Emporia had issued a water warning late Monday afternoon.
Shortly after 7 pm, the city went from a water warning to a water watch — meaning there is “higher than usual usage that may require voluntary water conservation efforts.” The warning, which means mandatory conservation in Emporia and water distribution system across Lyon County and parts of several surrounding counties, had been enacted shortly before 5 pm after several water main breaks, including one on a 20-inch transmission line in the 1600 block of Prairie.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates.
5:10 pm Monday: City of Emporia under water warning until further notice
The city of Emporia has been placed under a water warning following several line breaks across Emporia Monday.
The city issued the warning just after 4:50 pm asking all residents to avoid unnecessary water usage until the warning is lifted. City Manager Trey Cocking says the warning comes after the city noticed a dip in pressure within the water system.
Cocking points to the break on a 20-inch line in the 1600 block of Prairie Street around 2:20 pm as the likely cause of the drop in pressure. Cocking says he is hopeful the warning will be lifted before the end of the night Monday once repairs on the Prairie Street water main are complete.

Underground utility crews were called to both the intersection of 18th Avenue and Dover Street and Derecho Court just before 2:30 pm. Repair work is ongoing at both locations at last word.
