Two people were hospitalized after a crash in southeast Emporia early Sunday morning.
Lyon County Deputy Robert Miller says authorities were alerted to the situation in the 200 block of Sylvan shortly before 2:15 am after reports of a female yelling for help. Deputies found 19-year-old Giselle Sandoval of Emporia lying down in grass near a car that apparently hit a tree.
Additional investigation revealed that 24-year-old Wilver Sandoval, also of Emporia, was in the vehicle at the time of the crash along with a four-month-old child. Neither were in the car when deputies arrived.
The investigation also indicated Giselle Sandoval was driving southbound Sylvan and crossed the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks at a high rate of speed. She lost control of the car and hit a tree. An ambulance took her to Newman Regional Health for unspecified injuries. The child was eventually found — deputies haven’t said where — and was taken to Newman Regional Health by private vehicle for observation. Wilver Sandoval was later found and is OK, according to Sheriff Jeff Cope.
The investigation continues and a decision on formal charges is currently pending.
