Two people are dead after a house fire between Emporia and Americus early Friday.
Fire crews from Emporia, Americus and Dunlap, along with Lyon County deputies, were dispatched to 1993 Road G around 4 am. Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope confirmed a female had passed away around 9:30 am, confirming the second fatality, a male, around noon. Names have not been released.
The house was destroyed, and Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the house had already collapsed by the time crews arrived. It took 2.5 hours to control the fire and it took longer to get the remaining hot spots eliminated. Road G was closed periodically to help with water resupply. Firefighting was also delayed by Friday morning’s storm activity.
The Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal says it is involved with the investigation along with Emporia Fire and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing and Cope stated in a recent news release additional information will not be announced until after identification of the deceased individuals is complete. An investigation is set to begin soon after a destructive house fire between Emporia and Americus.
The fire was reported around 4 am at 1993 Road G and brought the house to the ground. The fire was contained by 6:30 am, but Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says there were numerous hot spots to extinguish — so the investigation is delayed somewhat.
Americus Road was closed briefly between Roads 190 and 200 to account for emergency vehicle traffic. Other details will develop through the day.

A house has been destroyed by fire between Emporia and Americus overnight.
Firefighters from both cities and Lyon County deputies were called to 1993 Road G, finding a home fully engulfed in flames. The fire brought the house to the ground and was still burning certain parts of the home as of 5:45 am. The cause is currently undetermined. There is currently no official word about injuries.
This is near the eastern S-curve for Americus Road. Traffic will be slowed as the fire response turns into an investigation.
