With fall harvest underway statewide, the Kansas Highway Patrol is asking drivers to step up their caution and patience, especially if tractors, combines and other farm implements are on the road nearby.
The Highway Patrol reminds drivers of other vehicles that most farm equipment is designed to travel at 25 mph or less, well below highway speed, and it’s often wider than the lane of traffic — in some cases, significantly wider. With that in mind, the Highway Patrol is asking drivers to keep in mind several basic tips:
*Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re nearby
*Pass with exterme caution
*A farm vehicle pulling to the right side of a road doesn’t automatically mean it’s turning right or letting you pass
*Use the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a reminder to slow down
*Be patient
*Pay attention
Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Candice Breshears says drivers should be cautious on all roads, but especially busy rural roads with unmarked intersections, many of which may be paved with gravel.
