Heavy rainfall last week led to some improvements in the US Drought Monitor’s weekly update map, but those improvements didn’t affect everybody in the KVOE listening area.
Extreme drought, the next-to-worst level on the Drought Monitor scale, retreated west. Extreme drought is now covering virtually all of Chase and Coffey counties, northwest and south Lyon County south of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50, most of Greenwood and Morris counties, southeast Osage and western Wabaunsee counties.
Moderate to severe drought now covers most of Lyon, Osage and Wabaunsee counties, as well as western Chase and Morris counties.
Pockets of exceptional drought, the worst level on the scale, remain in central Chase and north Greenwood counties.
Area residents got anywhere from 2-4 inches of rainfall as part of two separate rounds of storms last week.
