Chase County Fishing Lake has an unusual resident, if only for the time being.
A flamingo was noted at the lake recently. How much longer it plans to stay is to be determined.
Chase County Sheriff Jacob Welsh says deputies have reached out to the Kansas Department of Widlife and Parks. Welsh says traffic at the lake has been higher than normal, with people traveling for upwards of four hours to go to the lake and see the flamingo before returning home. People planning to go to the lake are told to watch for pedestrians and to park where their access is not restricted. The other request: do not try to catch the bird.
Flamingos live on large, shallow water bodies like saline lakes. American or Caribbean flamingos typically live in Florida, the Caribbean islands, northern South America and Mexico.
