Our current blast of hot weather isn’t a record — yet.
The National Weather Service says Thursday’s high of 96 fell short of the daily record high — 102 degrees set in 1953. That could change Friday as temperatures are set to climb to 97, above the current record of 94 set in 2002. Saturday’s current record high is also in jeopardy. The current record is 93 degrees set in 1952. Saturday’s forecast is 95.
Given the heat, south breezes up to 30 mph and humidity levels below 30 percent the next few days, the fire danger is elevated and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency for the fire danger Thursday. The disaster declaration is until further notice. Residents are encouraged to avoid any outdoor burn activities until conditions improve.
