The Emporia State women’s soccer team scratched out a first half lead before outshooting Northeastern State 6-2 in the second on the way to a 2-0 win at Emporia High School Friday night. NSU started the match in control with two shots in the first three minutes forcing two saves by Lady Hornet keeper Mackenzi Goen. Emporia State broke through with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half when graduate forward Alexis Cole tucked a shot inside the low-left corner of the net. A late shot by Lady Hornet forward Karlie Kanaga forced a RiverHawk save as ESU took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Lady Hornets controlled the action through the first 25 minutes of the second half outshooting the RiverHawks 4-1. Mackenzie Dimarco had three of the shots for the Hornets before Hadlie Lowe broke through for a goal with just over 11 minutes to play to make it 2-0 E-State. The RiverHawks managed just one shot the rest of the way.
The Lady Hornets move 2-4-3 on the year with the win and are 1-1 in MIAA play. Emporia State returns to action Sunday hosting Rogers State. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and is tentatively scheduled to be the first game of the year to be played on the ESU Soccer Pitch. A final determination for the location of the game will be made on Saturday.
