A coroner’s report confirms a combination of fire and smoke was responsible for the deaths of two people at a rural Emporia home late last month.
Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says the fire at 1993 Road G early Sept. 22 led to the deaths of Lee Roy Phillips, 88, and Mary Ann Phillips, 85.
Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford officially listed the fire’s cause as undetermined in a news release Tuesday. Bradford did not mention where the fire started. The home was destroyed.
Emporia Fire and Lyon County deputies investigated alongside the Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal.
