Kansas Interfaith Action is beginning a conversation about a trend involving religion and politics with an event in Emporia this weekend.
Panel discussions Sunday at Emporia’s First United Methodist Church and elsewhere across the state are titled “Countering the Threat of White Christian Nationalism,” revolving around the thought the United States is a Christian nation and should be rooted in Christian teachings as a result. The discussions will be moderated by Rabbi Moti Rieber, KIFA’s executive director, and will look at its impact on state and national politics, including related concerns about voter suppression, weakening of public education and reduced rights for LGBTQ+ residents.
Sunday’s discussion begins at 4 pm and is open to the public. Speakers will include Rieber, Washburn Associate Professor of Religious Studies Chris Jones and Emporia Presbyterian Church Rev. Phyl Stutzman. It’s part of KIFA’s Small Cities Project to foster engagement in Emporia, Manhattan, Newton and Salina.
