Coffey County’s Special Response Team assisted counterparts in Anderson County after a barricade situation in Garnett this past weekend.
The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office says the call came Saturday afternoon after a white male, later identified as James Chambers, had allegedly assaulted a woman “in a violent manner.” Local officers found Chambers had barricaded himself into his garage and refused to comply with requests or commands to surrender. Once observed, the Sheriff’s Office says Chambers had a rifle and shotgun, as well as “multiple” magazines of ammunition in hand and strapped to him.
Chambers allegedly made several threats about his willingness to use his weapons against law enforcement, but law enforcement subdued Chambers using “less lethal means” after a five-hour negotiation process. No officers or residents were hurt.
Formal charges are pending.
