After an urgent request for residents to report low water or no water pressure early Thursday, a water main break has been confirmed.
City Manager Trey Cocking says a water main break was discovered around 7 am at Fifth and Arundel. Crews will begin the repair process shortly.
Demand shot up around 1,200 gallons per minute around 4 am. Since the break was found, demand has returned to normal. The spike in demand per minute equated to a roughly 3 million gallon increase in the daily demand from 10 million gallons to 13 million.

Emporia city officials are asking residents to report any low — or no — water pressure after a spike in water demand overnight.
City Manager Trey Cocking says demand shot up around 1,200 gallons per minute around 4 am. Crews and Cocking have been driving around town since then, trying to find the source of the problem.
Cocking says residents suffering from low or zero pressure can call Lyon County Emergency Communications at 620-343-4225 until 8 am or Emporia Public Works at 620-340-6339 during normal business hours.
