Saturday will be a festive day in downtown Emporia.
Several major community events are taking place, including Emporia’s fifth annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. Sally Sanchez of Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow says the leadoff activity — the parade — is a big part of the overall event.
The parade begins at 10:30 am, with a stiltwalker, mariachi music, traditional dance, nearly 40 vendors and lots of food all part of the event. To sign up for the parade or be a vendor, go online to emporiamainstreet.com. To volunteer, go online to hottfiesta.com.
Emporia Main Street, meanwhile, has its annual trick-or-treating extravaganza Saturday. Here’s Director Casey Woods:
Residents can email photos, category and contact information to community@emporiamainstreet.com.
Haunted historic tours take place Friday night and Saturday nights, but those are full. Tours begin at 9 pm, but residents on the tours need to be at the Emporia Main Street office, 727 Commercial, by 8:30 pm. Locations are:
*Poehler Mercantile, 301 Commercial
*318 and 320 Commercial upper stories
*Historic Clinton Hotel, 332 Commercial
*Former Spic and Span Dry Cleaners, 17 West Fourth
*502 Commercial underground archways
In addition to those activities, the Emporia Granada Theatre will be busy as ZZ-KC, a ZZ Top tribute band, perform at the theater. The concert is at 7 pm. Tickets are available by calling the Granada box office at 620-342-3342 or by going online at emporiagranada.com.
