Two people were taken to safety after getting stuck in thick mud near an Emporia State facility Sunday.
The incident developed before 11 am outside Emporia State’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center, triggering at least two waves of responses — one by law enforcement and another by the Emporia Fire Department. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says two unnamed researchers got stuck in mud while conducting research slightly north of PAROC.
EFD used a ladder to help the researchers get unstuck. There are no reports of injuries.

Emporia Fire and local law enforcement are working a reported entrapment case in northeast Emporia.
Emporia State Police and Safety and Lyon County deputies were called to Emporia State’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center before 11 am, with Emporia Fire responding around 11. Details have not been confirmed.
