Lyon County Election Office workers have done some extra work on this Election Day.
Lyon County Clerk and Election Officer Tammy Vopat says a handful of voters in Precinct 36 just west of Emporia were affected by a ballot error. The issue developed after polls opened at 7 am.
Part of Precinct 36 didn’t get moved from 251 to 253. Vopat says the issue was human error that was not caught locally or at state levels.
Vopat says this affected seven voters. Election Office workers worked with the county vendor to make the needed changes. All the affected voters will have their ballots counted as needed. Residents with questions can call the Election Office at 620-341-3243.
Advance voter turnout was only approaching five percent heading into the official Election Day, and Vopat says the light turnout continues. Positions like mayor, City Council, City Commission and school board are on the ballot. Olpe also has a half-percent sales tax for capital improvements on the ballot.

6:45 am Tuesday: In-person turnout light heading into Election Day
Lyon County Election Officer Tammy Vopat is hoping for a good turnout for Election Day on Tuesday to help offset a light in-person turnout throughout this cycle.
That’s in large part because the in-person turnout was so light.
On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, Vopat said turnout was at 4 percent heading into the final morning of the in-person voting option. Turnout percentages are never strong for elections focusing on local matters, as this one does, but Vopat says this is at another level.
Tuesday’s election is all about local matters, including positions like mayor, City Council, City Commission and school board. Olpe also has a half-percent sales tax for capital improvements on the ballot.
Advance voting has ended with 721 Lyon County voters using the in-person process and 470 voters requesting mail ballots. Residents who have not turned in their mail ballots can still have them mailed and postmarked by Tuesday and be counted for this election cycle.
