The Emporia State athletic department announced sanctions against the Lady Hornet soccer team on Wednesday afternoon. Head coach Bryan Sailer has been placed on paid administrative leave and will not join the team on its trip to Ohio for the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In a release from the athletic department, the school says members of the ESU women’s soccer team violated the school’s code of conduct for student-athletes outlined in the department’s Student-Athlete Handbook. Players will be sanctioned in the form of reduced playing time for games in the tournament but does not specify which players received sanctions or give details of the sanctions. Assistant coach Chloe Marquez will serve as interim head coach for the games this weekend. The Lady Hornets are 14-5-4 and are scheduled to play Washburn for the fourth time this season in the Central Region Championship game on Friday. The Lady Hornets have built a program record 10-match winning streak entering the game. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
