Dan Slater left a lasting legacy in Lyon County government, first by serving as controller for 30 years and then by his two terms as commissioner.
Slater passed away Wednesday at age 74 after battling health concerns for several years. Current County Commission Chair Rollie Martin says Slater took a thoughtful approach to his different county positions.
Former county commissioner Scott Briggs says Slater will definitely be missed.
Briggs singled out Slater’s work to structure the Courthouse bond package and to create the Public Building Commission helping Newman Regional Health — and saving taxpayers a lot of money in both cases.
Cremation is planned. Visitation will be at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home from 7-8:30 pm Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:30 am Wednesday. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm Wednesday at Prairie Grove Cemetery west of Cottonwood Falls.
