Two notable construction projects for the city of Emporia are making progress.
The Mechanic Street parking lot project is nearing the halfway point. Curb and gutter work is between 80-90 percent finished, according to the city, with paving of the parking lot and breezeway starting last week. Kansas Gas continues to relocate its main in the alley as well as service lines to nearby businesses.
Work should finish this month, setting up construction in the 600 block parking lot to start early next year. The plan is to finish all related construction before Unbound Gravel activities in late May and early June.
Separately, the Peyton Street waterline replacement project will involve a lane drop for westbound US Highway 50 or Sixth Avenue traffic at Peyton beginning as soon as Monday. The city’s contractor will install about 250 feet of 16-inch water main along the north curb. The city has not said how long this will affect westbound traffic.
The Peyton Street project is designed to install new pipe eventually connecting both the city’s water towers. It should be done by spring 2024.
