The next two weeks may well be at or above normal when it comes to temperatures, but the Kansas Department for Children and Families is opening the door for emergency financial relief on energy bills earlier than normal.
Secretary Laura Howard says LIEAP, or Low Income Energy Assistance Program, will begin accepting applications Monday as opposed to early January, adding, “No Kansas family should be cold.” Howard also says DCF representatives and utility partners like Evergy, Atmos Energy, Black Hills Energy, Kansas Gas and Midwest Energy will have information available so residents needing emergency relief can gather information and submit their applications.
Residents applying for assistance need identification, current utility bills and — extremely importantly — proof of income for all adult household members. Aid eligibility is based on the number of people living at the family address and maximum gross monthly income, which has to be at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level to qualify.
