It was a split for Emporia High against Great Bend Friday night at Spartan Gymnasium.
The Emporia High girls defeated the Panthers 43-29. Emporia High led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter but Great Bend used an 8-2 second to cut the deficit to one at 16-15 at halftime. Great Bend led on two different occasions in the third quarter, but Emporia High used a 15-0 run to go up 16 and never looked back.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 14 points while Lexsey Dewitt added a career-high 13 points.
Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey says the Lady Spartans made the right adjustments at halftime.
The Lady Spartans enter the holiday break with a 5-1 record.
Meanwhile, the Emporia High boys fell short to the Panthers in a 45-42 loss. Emporia High led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and led by as many as seven in the second and led 22-19 at halftime. Great Bend then went on a 13-0 run of its own and led by seven in the fourth quarter, but Emporia rallied however only cut the deficit to one.
Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin says it was a fun game to be a part of despite falling just short.
River Peters led Emporia High with 17 points.
The Spartans enter the holiday break with a 4-2 record. Both teams return to action on Tuesday January 2nd at Hayden for their Centennial League opener.
