Solemnity was the story as Emporia joined the ranks of Wreaths Across America on Saturday.
Activities were held at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, with wreaths placed to honor every branch of service. Local coordinator Scott Burenheide was pleasantly surprised the turnout, with close to 100 people despite chilly, breezy conditions.
Burenheide’s plan — as soon as next year — is to have wreaths at the gravesites of all local veterans, meaning around 1,600 soldiers will be honored.
Worldwide, Wreaths Across America is honored at over 4,000 locations with nearly three million veteran wreaths involved.
