The Emporia High wrestling teams split their duals with Spring Hill Tuesday night at EHS.
The Lady Spartans won their dual, 39-36, while the Spartans’ dropped their dual, 42-28.
On the girls side, Emporia High held a 24-0 lead winning its first two matches before Spring Hill made things interesting making it 24-21 before Virginia Munoz’s victory by fall at 140 made it 30-21. Spring Hill won pulled back within five at 30-25 before Yaneli Carranza won 4-2 in a sudden victory at 155 to make it 33-25. Spring Hill won matches at 175 and 190 and took a brief 37-33 lead, however, the Lady Broncos were open at 235 giving Emporia a win there and the dual.
Emporia High coach Shawn Russell said it was a team effort to win a dual against a quality Class 5A team.
On the boys side, Emporia High won three of its first four matches to go up 13-6 before Spring Hill pulled within one with a victory at 132. Landon Wohletz gave Emporia High a 19-12 lead after his victory by fall at 138. Spring Hill won the next three matches at 144, 150 and 157 to go up 27-19 before Tayten Ervin won 3-1 in a sudden victory at 165. That was followed by a victory by fall by Jeremiah Huber at 175 giving Emporia High a 28-27 lead. Spring Hill won the final three matches at 190, 215 and 285 to take the dual.
Emporia High coach Brook Medrano said there were positives from the dual.
The Emporia High boys will be back in action January 4 when they travel to Salina Central for a dual.
The Lady Spartans will be back in action on January 6 when they travel to Dodge City along with the Spartans.
