A lot of people will be traveling between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
How busy? Shawn Steward of Kansas AAA says it could be the second-busiest Christmas holiday period on record.
The number of Kansans traveling at least 50 miles for at least one of the holidays equates to over 40 percent of the state population.
Nationwide, over 115 million travelers are expected. Air travel nationally may well set a record with over 7.5 million people in the air, so air travelers need to get to their airports at least an hour earlier than they would normally arrive. Alternate travel methods — bus, cruise and train — may well set a record with over 4 million people traveling by those methods.
For people traveling by car, truck, SUV or van, AAA has a chart for the best — and worst — travel times. Starting Saturday, the best travel time is before 10 am, with the worst time from 11 am to 7 pm. Minimal travel issues are expected for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the best travel times are before noon. The worst travel times are early afternoon through early evening.
