The city of Emporia will get extra funding for an improvement project through the federal government and the Kansas Department of Transportation.
City Manager Trey Cocking says the funds will pay for signal improvements on Industrial Road north of Interstate 35. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says Emporia will get $45,000 from KDOT while the city will add $15,000 of its own funds. The federal matching amount is $240,000.
The funds are part of the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Also called SS4A, the program has the federal government contributing 80 percent of project costs with a 20 percent local match. The federal program is a five-year, $5 billion competitive grant funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is designed to highlight safe driving techniques, safer road designs, proper speed limits and improved after-crash care.
