Emporians got an opportunity this past fall to participate in a class hosted by The University of Kansas’ Osher Insitute.
Linda Kehres of The University of Kansas’ Osher Institute was a recent guest on KVOE’s Morning Show to talk about their partnership with the Emporia Senior Center.
Kehres says one of her instructors taught a class in Lawrence and suggested bringing a class to Emporia. Kehres then reached out to Emporia Senior Center Director Ian Boyd to see if they would be interested in hosting, and gratefully, Boyd accepted.
Around 30 people attended the fall session held in Emporia. Kehres says the class is 65 percent lecture while the rest of the class is participation. Kehres says students of the class are well-educated and well-connected individuals while having fun in class.
Kehres says feedback has been positive and they are willing to get classes into other communities with senior centers being a great fit. The Osher Institute offers classes with topics such as history, humanities, arts, music, and current events. says having the class in Emporia was convenient.
The next class the institute will host at the Emporia Senior Center will be on March 20 at 9:30 a.m. taught by Jim Hoy on the myths, legends, and tales of Kansas.
