Revelers are gearing up to take in the new year this weekend and local law enforcement are encouraging them to do so, but to do it responsibly.
Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope tells residents to be mindful of overconsumption of alcohol and to have a plan in place to get home once the festivities have concluded. He says if you are planning to consume alcohol while celebrating New Year’s to not drive for any reason.
He says accidents can happen anywhere, but the margin for error is extremely low once you get out onto a county road or highway.
In addition to safety on the roadways, Cope says residents should be aware of their surroundings when at a holiday event, especially if they are around individuals they do not know. He says if individuals around you have overconsumed and become restless, that is a good sign it may be time to move on.
He adds, that you should never leave your drink unattended in unfamiliar settings.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is among several local law enforcement agencies participating in the New Year’s Taking Down DUI enforcement effort that runs through January 2.
