The last time Olpe and Madison girls met, it saw Olpe advancing to the state tournament after a substate championship victory last March. It may have proved to be enough motivation for Madison to get the upper hand this evening defeating Olpe 54-43.
The first half saw both teams trading blows with neither unable to take control, with the first and second quarters tied. Madison found a rhythm in the second half, building a lead of seven to end the third. Olpe’s cold shooting in the second half, 5/37, did not allow for them to garner a comeback in the fourth.
Madison was led in scoring by Jaylynn Weakley with 24, and Candice Ashlock added 17. Madison girls coach Bill Nienstedt was proud of his team for bouncing back after their loss to Lebo on Thursday.
Olpe’s Milly Bailey (14) and Kayla Steinke (12) were also in double figures.
Madison improved to 6-2, while Olpe is now 7-2.
In the second part of the evening, it was a game of ups and downs for Olpe as they pushed past Madison 60-44.
Olpe would enjoy an 11-0 run in the first and a 16-0 to begin the third quarter, but it was the moments between those runs that had Olpe’s head coach Chris Schmidt ready for his team to get some practice time.
Olpe improves to 8-1, having four players in double figures. Brecken McGuire (20), Blake Skalsky (16), Ethan Redeker (11), Abbott Bailey (11).
Lane Dabro was the leading scorer for Madison with 13, and Colton Isch 11. Madison is now 5-3.
Olpe travels to MDCV, while Madison matches up with Hartford on Tuesday.
