While the extreme cold will be exiting the area soon, its effects are likely to linger for a while longer, namely its impact on local water customers. An emergency water conservation order remains in place for customers of Coffey County Rural Water District 2 as well as residents in Burlington and Newstrawn until further notice.
RWD 2 serves areas just south of Emporia, Hartford and Burlington and just east of Olpe. Burlington city officials have told KVOE News in recent days that water demand has been roughly double its normal level over the past week with a number of water leaks reported.
