Mandatory water conservation continues for significant portions of Lyon and Coffey counties.
The towns of Burlington and New Strawn, along with Coffey County Rural Water District 2 — covering much of southern Lyon County and the southwest corner of Coffey County — have been under mandatory restrictions since Thursday after a rash of confirmed or suspected water leaks drove up water use, specifically in Burlington.
The Burlington city Facebook page has several water conservation tips posted. Besides letting faucets drip to reduce the risk of frozen and broken pipes, tips include:
*Insulating exposed outdoor pipes.
*Collecting water from dripping faucets to flush toilets or water plants
*Check for leaks after any thaws
*Turn off water as soon as possible if pipes break.
*Make sure the furnace is maintained. Also, never let the house temperature to go under 55 degrees.
*Install a water monitoring system to gauge water consumption and get leak alerts.
Residents with confirmed or suspected water leaks in these affected areas can call officials to get their meters shut down until their situations are investigated and, if needed, fixed:
