After a day’s worth of rough travel conditions and schedule adjustments due to wintry precipitation, a repeat performance may be coming, across the listening area Monday night into midday Tuesday.
Winter weather advisories go into effect for the entire listening area at 6 pm Monday and continue through 6 am Tuesday for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties. A separate advisory will continue until noon Tuesday for Chase and Greenwood counties.
The advisories come with more freezing rain and drizzle forecasted to begin in the evening hours Monday through the overnight hours and possibly lead to a thin glaze of ice across local roadways by Tuesday morning. The ice could lead to some troublesome travel conditions, especially for early-morning commuters.
On a positive note, Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking says the treatment materials spread out across town Monday should help traction Tuesday.
Almost all area schools closed or delayed operations. Emporia State and Flint Hills Technical College also delayed operations. And the Lyon County League Basketball Tournament postponed all Monday’s games to Tuesday — meaning the originally scheduled Tuesday games will be on what had been the off day Wednesday. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday, Director Ted Vannocker said he doesn’t expect a lot of hassles with the changes.
Kandrive.org shows all area highways continue to experience seasonal driving conditions, however, none are reported to have any major obstructions at this time.
There have been numerous slide-offs areawide and at least two possible injury wrecks on the Kansas Turnpike, one just south of the Flint Hills cattle pens exit at mile marker 111 shortly before 2 am. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a semi was stopped in the highway due to a prior crash and a car driven by 21-ear-old Kaitlyn Cave of Wichita slid into the trailer. Nobody was transported.
Another injury wreck developed at Turnpike mile marker 148 outside the Admire-Council Grove exit about 20 minutes later. A semi driven by 28-year-old Parminderjeet Singh slid on the highway and went through a guardrail. Singh suffered suspected minor injuries and was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment.

11 am Monday: WEATHER: Travel conditions improve in Emporia as Monday morning progresses
In Emporia or out of town, just about everybody has been dealing with a thin glaze of ice early Monday — but it appears much of the travel issues are melting away.
Winter weather advisories continue areawide Monday morning due to the ice, which may not be more than a few hundredths of an inch thick in most spots. KDOT road crews have been out since Sunday night and both Emporia and Lyon County crews went out early Monday to start attacking the thin sheet of ice. Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking says there was a lot of improvement on main roads through the morning hours.
Kandrive.org lists all area highways as seasonal as of late Monday morning. Highways had seen a range from seasonal to completely ice-covered around sunrise.

KDOT road crews have been out since Sunday night and both Emporia and Lyon County crews went out early Monday to start attacking the thin sheet of ice, but Lyon County Deputy Nathan Rankin tells KVOE News it’s slick all over.
