Duane Henrikson has enjoyed a fruitful career in Emporia, but it has been his work for the community that helped him earn the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.
Henrikson discussed the honor, his career and his community work on KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Tuesday.
Born and raised in Emporia, Henrikson was a veterinarian locally for decades, retiring about 12 years ago. As he got his practice established, he says it was important to enrich the community that had supported him.
Besides his practice, Henrikson has been heavily involved in the restoration of the Emporia Granada Theatre and the ongoing renovations of the David Traylor Zoo through the Oasis capital campaign. His photography has also been used as murals through a downtown project organized by Emporia Celebrates the Flint Hills.
Henrikson will be officially recognized during the Chamber’s Annual Meeting coming Friday at the Emporia State Memorial Union Webb Hall. So will Clark Carpet and Tile as the Business of the Year, Karen Belford as the Volunteer of the Year and Emporia Spanish Speakers as the Community Impact Award honoree. The event has officially sold out and a waiting list is in effect. For information, call the Chamber at 620-342-1600.
