Abundant Harvest is expanding its reach and as such the demand for its services has doubled over the past year.
That was the report from Abundant Harvest Director Lee Alderman during an appearance on KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday.
Alderman adds the need is very evident when you consider there is typically no food left following a distribution.
Alderman adds the increase in need for food is not limited just to the citizens of Emporia or Lyon County as they are starting to lend assistance to small communities within a 35 to 40-mile radius due to various food pantries that closed down or “went away” following the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the demand is high, Alderman says partnerships with the Kansas Food Bank and Frito Lay have helped to keep their pallets full over the past year. On top of those major suppliers, Abundant Harvest has continued its food reclamation program with various local businesses and is constantly working to add more to the fold.
Along with its regular food distributions every Monday through Friday from 5 am to 7 am Abundant Harvest is also continues providing its evening meals program every Monday and Wednesday at 4 pm. Alderman says they typically prepare 70-plus meals each day for distribution through that program.
