A back-and-forth game early, found Lebo pulling away for a 52-39 victory over Olpe. It was the second consecutive tournament championship for the program. Olpe was Lebo’s only loss on the season, losing 49-47 back in December.
Keeping the game close for Olpe was Kadey Robert in the first half, scoring 11 points in the first two frames. Robert, who scored 32 the previous night, was the main focus for Lebo. Adjustments at the mid-game break, limited Robert to only four points in the second half.
Lebo’s Audrey Peek played one of the best tournament championship games scoring 30 points in the victory. Peak said it was the team effort that pushed Lebo to victory.
It was an all-time classic in the boys contest, as Olpe came away victorious 63-58 against Lebo. A game which never saw a lead by more than five points by either team, had each team trade blows throughout the contest. Lebo led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter, with Olpe leading 35-33 at the half.
With Olpe’s Brecken McGuire in foul trouble in the second half, it was Blake Skalsky who filled the void. Skalsky scored 15 of his 27 points in the last two frames.
Although Olpe struggled on defense and limiting offensive boards at times, Olpe’s coach Chris Schmidt was proud of how his team overcame diversity to win.
With the win, Olpe has now won three straight tournament titles. They are the first team to win three or more since Waverly won four in a row from 1989-1992. Waverly was coached by Mike Hevel during that run. With the victory tonight, Chris Schmidt tied Hevel with 10 tournament championships.
Olpe and Lebo will square off again on February 12th, which will be the area game of the week on Country 101.7FM.
