The National Weather Service Topeka office has announced dates and locations for spotter training sessions later this year.
The Lyon County session will be March 27 at the Emporia State Memorial Union Preston Family Room. The Coffey County spotter session will be March 20 at the 4-H Building in Burlington. Both begin at 7 pm.
Areawide, there are two other sessions currently on the schedule:
*March 4: Eureka High School auditorium, 6:30 pm
*March 25: Chase County Community Center, 6:30 pm
Residents who want to attend a virtual session through the Topeka office have opportunities March 19 or April 1, both at 7 pm. Residents need to go to weather.gov/top to register. The Wichita office has not confirmed whether it will have virtual sessions.
Presentations typically last 60-90 minutes and delve into different kinds of storms, cloud features that indicate a storm’s severity, severe weather safety and hazardous weather reporting procedures.
Last year saw a supercell thunderstorm drop eight tornadoes in Chase County in mid-April, with the historic Chase County Courthouse narrowly missed by a tornado and the Cottonwood Falls baseball field having some damage.
Once again this severe weather season, KVOE will keep you informed with updates, field reporting and information from our volunteer KVOE Storm Team spotter network.
