A moderate earthquake in central Oklahoma caused 30 reports of shaking across the KVOE listening area.
The magnitude 5.1 quake developed shortly after 11:30 pm about five miles northwest of Prague, nearly 60 miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, nearly 70 miles southwest of Tulsa and about 230 miles southwest of Emporia.
Most of the area reports – 17 — came from Emporia. Virtually all the reports, whether they came from Emporia or neighboring communities like Burlington, Eureka, Hamilton, Hartford, Leroy, Lyndon, Madison, Olpe, Reading and Virgil, were weak in nature. The only report of light shaking, a level above weak, came from Gridley.
The Prague earthquake generated over 24,000 shaking reports across the United States and into Canada. It was one of nearly 30 earthquakes that developed in Oklahoma from Friday evening through Saturday morning.
