The Emporia Recreation Commission has a special meeting Monday evening.
Board members are holding the meeting to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Emporia City Commission and USD 253 Board of Education on a new Recreation Center steering committee. The initial MOU dealt specifically with the Rec Commission and the city, but may well be amended to bring USD 253 officially into the conversations after recent discussions.
The meeting starts at 5:30 pm Monday at the Lee Beran Recreation Center.
The steering committee could well make an official recommendation on whether the Rec Commission builds a new public recreation center to replace the Lee Beran Rec Center or whether to expand the current building. Rec Commission officials and board members have said Lee Beran has less than half the needed space to meet current or future demand. The Rec Commission has floated a half-cent to one-cent sales tax as the main funding mechanism for the project.
