A report of a possible gas leak in central Emporia turned out to have a different cause altogether.
Emporia firefighters were first dispatched to 28 South Commercial shortly before 1 pm, later going to 15 South Mechanic as the investigation continued. Fire Capt. Wade Schmidt says a burn pit was found in that area, so the incident was documented as a trash or rubbish fire instead of a gas leak.
No evacuations were needed and no injuries were reported.
