Despite a notable and quick uptick locally, Kansas is still one of the cheapest states to fill up your vehicle.
According to Kansas AAA Manager of Public and Government Affairs Shawn Steward Kansas ranks amongst the top five cheapest states for gas averaging around $2.75 per gallon as of February, well below the national average of $3.14.
Areawide, prices have seen a roughly 35 cents increase in some counties in the last few weeks. However; prices are still close to if not below the state average ranging anywhere from $2.59 in Osage County to as high as $2.79 in Lyon County.
Steward says this is relatively normal for the winter season which typically sees a drop in travel and therefore demand.
Steward adds the price of a single gallon of gas depends on a number of factors starting with the cost of crude oil, prices for which have been holding “pretty stable” in recent months.
As we enter the spring and summer months, Steward says it is likely we could see an uptick in prices given the high level of travel that occurs in those seasons. When asked if he believed prices could rise to exceed $3 a gallon, like they did last year, Steward says it is a possibility, but not a certainty.
