It was a clean sweep for the Emporia High basketball teams Tuesday night over Hayden at Spartan Gymnasium.
In a battle of ranked teams, the Emporia High girls ranked No. 5 in 5A defeated the second-ranked team in 3A, 44-32, to extend their winning streak to 12. Emporia High could not have asked for a better start. The Lady Spartans started the game by scoring the first 29 points to hold a 29-0 lead with 5:15 to play in the second quarter before Hayden scored the next 13 points to cut the deficit to 29-13 at halftime. Hayden outscored the Lady Spartans 10-5 in the third quarter, but Emporia High still led 34-23 going to the fourth. The Wildcats cut the deficit to nine in the fourth quarter, but not any closer. Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 25 points.
Emporia High girls coach Carolyn Dorsey said a win is a win no matter how it’s done.
Emporia High is now 14-1 on the season and 6-0 in the Centennial League. The Lady Spartans have a two-game lead over Hayden and Washburn Rural in the league standings.
In the boys game, it was a defensive battle that Emporia High won 50-24. Hayden led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter before Emporia High went on a 10-0 run and eventually led 18-14 at halftime. The Spartans led 23-20 midway through the third quarter and outscored the Wildcats 27-4 the remainder of the game. River Peters led Emporia High with 17 points while Nolan Jacob added a career-high 15 points.
Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said it was a great game defensively holding the Wildcats to their lowest-scoring output of the season.
Emporia High is now 10-5 on the season, 4-2 in the Centennial League. Emporia High will play their next two games on the road, the first on Friday at Topeka High. We’ll carry the games on KVOE with the RV-Doc Pregame Show beginning at 5:40 p.m.
