The Emporia State softball team started their home schedule 3-0 over the weekend at the ESU Classic. ESU celebrated Opening Day at the Trusler Sports Complex Saturday with a 13-6 victory over Wayne State College. After a Wildcat run in the first, ESU scored the next 11 runs over three innings. Alexis Dial, Abby Ward and Emma Furnish combined for nine of the Lady Hornets 16 hits and nine of the team’s 12 RBIs. ESU then picked up two wins on Sunday, both via shutout. First was a 9-0 run-rule of UMary in five innings. The Lady Hornets scored five in the second and three in the fourth while outhitting the Marauders 12-2. Bailey Flewelling finished 3-for-3 in the game while Josie Harrison (2-2) picked up the five-inning complete game shutout victory. E-State then blanked Wayne State 7-0 thanks to a three-hit complete game shutout from Jayda VanAckern (3-2). Lexi Williams and Dial each had three hits and combined for five of the team’s seven RBIs. The Lady Hornets are now 7-6 and will take a six-game winning streak into their final two games of the Classic Monday against UMary at 10:30 a.m. and Sioux Falls at 12:45 p.m.
