Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope has been serving the county in his current role for nearly 14 years and he is looking to add on another four come November.
This past Friday, Cope filed for re-election to the position he’s held since 2010 when he took over for then-Sheriff Gary Eichorn who held the office from 2000 to 2010. When asked why he is seeking another term as Sheriff, Cope stated he simply loves the opportunity to continue serving the citizens of Lyon County.
Throughout his tenure as Sheriff, Cope says the department has had a high level of community and civic engagement, something he takes great pride in.
If re-elected, Cope says one of his office’s major focuses will be on increasing mental health services within the Lyon County Detention Center for staff and inmates alike. Cope is currently running unopposed.
Cope’s filing came the same day as Lyon County Second District Commission incumbent Doug Peck. Both Cope and Peck’s filings came a day after Lyon County Commission Second District hopeful Sid Morgan filed his paperwork with the Lyon County Clerk’s Office. In addition to Peck and Cope, Lyon County Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss and Treasurer Sharon Gaede have both filed for re-election to their respective positions.
Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman has stated he will not be seeking another term in office after serving as Lyon County’s lead prosecutor for the last 24 years. Also up for re-election this year is First District County Commissioner and longtime Lyon County Commission Chairman Rollie Martin.
Martin has yet to publicly state if he will seek another term in office. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon June 1.
The traditional primary election is Aug. 6, followed by the general election Nov. 5.
